After the tragic loss of his mother in World War II, eleven-year-old Mahito has to leave his home in Tokyo and move to the countryside with his father to live with his new wife. Isolated and surrounded only by quirky old ladies, the boy begins to explore his new home and its enchanted landscape. On one of his expeditions, he meets a mysterious heron who leads him into a mysterious parallel world...
