Stoker

Tuesday, 9. July 2024

Kino Xenix, Zürich

Park Chan-wook, GB/USA 2013

In his first and only English-language production so far, Park Chan-wook puts Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman in a magnificent setting: STOKER is a dark fairy tale about growing up, the secrets of a family and the awakening of evil.

After the sudden death of her beloved father, eighteen-year-old India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska) has lost her only emotional reference point - she is left alone with her neurotic and unstable mother (Nicole Kidman) in the large Victorian family villa. Shortly afterwards, Uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode), whose existence she had not known about until then, appears out of nowhere. With his caring nature and his irresistible, but also threatening charm, Charlie immediately casts a spell over the two women. But India soon realizes that his arrival was no coincidence and that they are connected by far more than just blood ties.

The nuclear family as the nucleus of madness: Park Chan-wook, a profound connoisseur of film history, draws inspiration from Hitchcock's SHADOW OF A DOUBT, among others, for his first and so far only American project and weaves familiar elements of Gothic horror with modern elements of a psychological thriller in highly elegant, atmospheric image compositions.
