Park Chan-wook, KR/USA 2009
After a medical experiment gone wrong, a self-sacrificing Catholic priest turns into a vampire in search of love, sensuality and – blood!
The conscientious Catholic hospital priest Sang-hyeon (Song Kang-ho) has run out of words. He has nothing more to offer the dying patients than compassionate prayers. So he decides to travel to Africa to make himself available as a test subject in the search for a cure for the deadly Emmanuel virus. He is soon infected with the virus, but the antidote administered fails. Then the miracle happens: after an emergency blood transfusion, Sang-hyeon returns to the circle of the living. But the “rebirth” has a catch: the fresh blood in his veins comes from a vampire… And Sang-hyeon soon learns about love – and sin.
Park Chan-wook's intoxicating love story, brimming with pop-cultural references, is based on Émile Zola's scandalous erotic novel "Thérèse Raquin" from 1867 and shows vampirism as a metaphor for the insatiable addiction that intensifies as well as destroys life.
