The 40-year-old nurse Manuela lives in Madrid with her 16-year-old son, who is ambitious about being a writer. Esteban scribbles notes and thoughts about a father he believes to be dead in his diary and writes short stories. He wants to enter one of these works into a literary competition. The topic of the story: his mother's life. To do this, he would have to find out more about his father. But it doesn't happen that far. Before Manuela can tell him the whole truth, fate strikes: Esteban is run over in the form of a car. He dies. Overwhelmed by grief, Manuela sets out to find Esteban's father, who must still be living happily ever after somewhere. During her research, she meets people who change her life: the actresses Huma and Nina, the transvestite Agrado, the sister Rosa, who supports prostitutes and transvestites, and Rosa's mother, who has absolutely no idea what her daughter's calling is. A crazy journey begins...
Pedro Almodovar: Actually, it all started quite harmlessly. Little Pedro was born in 1951 in a small town in the poor province of La Mancha. Hardly had he grown out of his pimples when the young man moved to the big city of Madrid. However, he did not earn his first living in the film business. He worked as an employee for the Spanish telephone company. But even then his interests lay elsewhere. He was also working on his first film: he shot 'Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del monton' (1980) on a Super 8, a technically rather naive film. But the young director did not give up and refined his technique over the following years until the films achieved the professionalism, narrative density and wacky shrillness for which Pedro Almodovar became so well known. The director achieved his international breakthrough with 'Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios' (1988). The following films 'Atame!' 'Tajones lejanos', 'Kika', 'Flor de mi secreto' and most recently 'Carne tremula' made him the most famous Spanish film director since Luis Buñuel. 'Todo sobre mi madre' is once again an 'Almodovar' as it should be, a film about the universe of women, about everyday madness and the tragicomic events in the life of a 40-year-old who desperately tries to wring meaning from her existence.
