Lecture by Prof. Dr. Chris Walton, music researcher, about the relationship between Armin Rüeger and Othmar Schoeck.
Musical accompaniment: Lisa Herzog-Kuhnert, violin, and Katja Lichtensteiger, grand piano.

From 1917 to 1937, Armin Rüeger was the "house librettist" of Othmar Schoeck, the most successful Swiss opera composer of the 20th century. Together they created three operas - Don Ranudo, Venus and Massimilla Doni - and planned even more. Outsiders advised Schoeck several times to find a lyricist other than his best friend from Bischofszell, who worked as a pharmacist. However, Schoeck was attached to Rüeger and the collaboration only ended before the Second World War at Rüeger's request.

In recent years, Rüeger and his collaboration with Schoeck have been reassessed in expert circles. This lecture examines their relationship and their joint operas in more detail.
