Francis "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is a girl from a wealthy family. She and her family spend the summer holidays in 1963 in Max Kellerman's (Jack Weston) hotel, where Baby meets the dashing dance teacher Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) - his show makes her want to dance too. But the mambo god has no time for spoiled girls from the upper class. But then his dance partner Penny (Cynthia Rhodes) drops out because of an unwanted pregnancy and Baby offers to help. Now she is supposed to learn the complicated mambo figures in a hurry. The couple quickly grow closer emotionally, but have to overcome various problems along the way: a series of thefts and the golden hotel rule that staff and guests must be separated by an invisible line cause problems for Baby and Johnny...
