The spirited Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley) has little in common with the pious Edith Swan (Olivia Colman), except that they are neighbors in the English seaside town of Littlehampton in the 1920s. One day, Edith and other residents of the town begin to receive obscene letters, and suspicion immediately falls on Rose. Police officer Gladys Moss begins to suspect that something is wrong. Together with a group of women, Gladys tries to solve the mystery, free Rose and catch the real culprit.
