Salzhaus, Winterthur

Thousands of miles of ocean may separate the desert blues of Tinariwen and the authentic country music of rural America, but the connections are as palpable as they are romantic.

On “Amadjar,” their ninth studio album, Tinariwen sets out to explore these shared feelings. Banjos, fiddles and pedal steel mix seamlessly with the engaging guitar lines and hypnotic grooves of the Tuareg band as well as a hand-picked group of American country musicians who were to travel to Africa and work with the band in their natural desert environment. Full of poetic allegories, the texts call for unity and freedom. They are songs of struggle and resistance with clear references to the recent desperate political upheavals in Mali and the increasing power of the Salafists. Tinariwen are much more than just a rock band, they are ambassadors for their people and a way of life that is in harmony with nature and that is threatened like never before. Her message has never sounded as urgent and convincing as on “Amatssou”.
