The pub ‹The Old Oak› is a special place: it is the last bastion against the years-long decline of a once-thriving mining town in the north-east of England. And it is the last meeting place for the community of former miners who feel betrayed by the "system". Landlord TJ Ballantyne can just about keep the pub running, but can barely keep himself afloat. The situation is not made any easier by the critically viewed arrival of Syrian refugees, who are housed in the village's numerous empty houses. Despite the many hostilities, a friendship develops between the young Syrian Yara and the landlord. Soon they are working together on a plan to calm the waves in the town and save the pub...
