The year is 1900. The famous Parisian courtesan Lili d'Alengy (Leïla Bekhti) is hiding a shameful secret - her daughter Tina, who was born with a disability. Unwilling to take care of a child that would jeopardize her career, she decides to leave Paris and go to Rome. There she meets Maria Montessori (Jasmine Trinca), a devoted doctor who develops a revolutionary learning method for children that was then considered "deficient". Her method follows a basic idea: as long as you love children, they can learn anything.
But Maria also hides a secret: an illegitimate child. At the time, an unthinkable scandal that no one must know about. While Tina blossoms under Montessori's supervision, Maria and Lili soon become close allies, helping each other to fight for their place in this man's world and thus making history.
