Priscilla Beaulieu was 14 years old when she met Elvis Presley at a party in 1959. Like her stepfather, he was stationed at an army base in Germany. What Priscilla and the ten-year-older and already much-admired rock 'n' roll star immediately connected were their conversations about their longing for home. At 17, she followed him to his estate in Graceland, Memphis. After her iconic wedding five years later and the birth of her daughter, Priscilla tried to fulfill the role of the perfect wife and responsible mother while Elvis was on tour or making films. She was exposed to his increasing mood swings, and at the same time felt controlled and abandoned. The loneliness in the splendid rooms of her estate, which soon seemed threatening, took its toll on her. Little by little, Priscilla began to emancipate herself from her famous husband.
Sofia Coppola's cinematic view of a female figure trapped in a golden cage was sensitive. It puts Priscilla Presley, usually in the shadow of the King of Rock 'n' Roll, at the center and shows the American myth of turbulent marriage from the inside perspective of the young, dreamy girl who develops into an independent, strong-willed woman. Priscilla Presley was involved in the film as a producer, and her memoirs "Elvis and Me" served as the starting point for the film. The impressive emancipation story brings the 60s and 70s to life with captivatingly composed sets, elegant costumes, opulent make-up and the cult soundtrack by the band Phoenix. "Priscilla" celebrated its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where Cailee Spaeny was awarded the prize for best actress for her sensitive portrayal of Priscilla.
