In 18th century Denmark, King Frederik V declares that the wild heaths of Jutland must be tamed, cultivated and colonized so that civilization can spread and taxes can increase. Ludvig van Kahlen is a distinguished Danish soldier who, despite his humble origins, has risen to the rank of captain in the German military. He wants to use his soldier's pension to found a settlement in the name of the king that will bring him wealth, honor and a noble title. But the power-hungry landowner Frederik De Schinkel lays claim to the land and tries to bring van Kahlen down with money, intrigue and violence. With unwavering determination, van Kahlen endures the setbacks and faces De Schinkel as well as the relentless forces of nature. But he also finds support and even love. The housekeeper Ann Barbara and the Roma girl Anmai Mus break through his strict facade, bring him out of his self-imposed retreat into solitude and ultimately persuade him to make a courageous decision.
