Twelve mysterious spaceships land simultaneously in different regions of the world. Their crew and their intentions - a mystery. In order to prevent global paranoia and a potential war, an elite team led by linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) and mathematician Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) is commissioned by the military to establish contact.
