Prabha und Anu arbeiten in einem Spital in Mumbai und teilen sich eine Wohnung. Prabha hat seit Jahren nichts von ihrem Mann gehört und verbietet sich jedes Liebesleben, die jüngere Anu ist frisch verliebt und trifft sich heimlich mit einem jungen Mann, den sie nicht lieben darf. Vor der schillernden Kulisse des nächtlichen Mumbais inszeniert Payal Kapadia einen verträumt-poetischen Film und schreibt damit Geschichte: In Cannes wurde sie als erste Inderin mit dem Grossen Preis der Jury ausgezeichnet.
