drumherum - An exhibition about packaging design

Su. 5. May - Su. 29. September 2024

Städtische Wessenberg-Galerie, Konstanz

  • Exhibition

The exhibition is devoted on the one hand to the topic of the secondary life of packaging as waste, but primarily to the history of this design genre.

We hold them in our hands every day. Sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for months in the cupboard, sometimes so beautiful that we even keep them empty: packaging. From yogurt pots to elegant perfume boxes to high-tech packaging made from recycled materials. Product packaging is our silent companion in everyday life.

Unconsciously, they shape our environment, entice us to buy and fill our garbage bags. They are beautiful, functional, useful, ugly, impractical, useless. They are garish, discreet, durable or for single use. They are all "surroundings" of the objects of our everyday life.

The exhibition is devoted to the topic of the secondary life of packaging as waste, but primarily to the history of this design genre. With a walk through the history of packaging since the late 19th century - with exhibits from the Boecher Brand & Packaging Design Collection - the joy of design unfolds to its full extent.

Materials and graphic design invite you to marvel. This part of the exhibition was curated by Hans-Georg Böcher, director of the Packaging Museum in Heidelberg, passionate collector and internationally recognized expert in the field of packaging.

The exhibition also offers an insight into the favorite packaging of the local urban community as well as design professionals. In addition to an exhibition of the work of the Japanese designer Katsu Kimura, a "material show" by the company IGEPA in connection with the elaborate poster design by Bureau Progressiv rounds off the exhibition.
